More About Me

My father gave me a guitar when I was eleven, and I immediately began playing guitar and singing all the time. I wasn't very good, but I was obsessed. I wrote my first song within a few months, an optimistic call for world peace called "If I Could Ring the Bell" (I was a Berkeley kid, after all). So now I had a three-way passion: singing, songwriting, and guitar playing. I'd found music and I was a goner. I've been writing, singing and playing ever since.

When Dad gave me the guitar he had very wisely scheduled a guitar lesson for me the next week. My teacher, Joe Freedman, turned out to be one of the best teachers I've ever had: smart, kind, talented, and he treated me like a grown-up instead of the clueless kid I was back then. He moved away within a couple of years, but Joe had made his mark: not only had he fueled and guided my passion for music, but he'd shown me what a great teacher can do.

My life has had a split focus for some time now. I write, sing, and play music, and I coach other singers. I try to write and record great songs, and I try to be as good a teacher as Joe and all the other great teachers I've had were. There's a nice balance between the two sides of performing and teaching music, and I'm not sure if I'd be happy if I just did one or the other.
